Hairless cows, Criollo cattle, Vacas sin pelo - livestock in Loja Ecuador

Hairless cow at agricultural fair in Loja Ecuador

You have probably seen hairless cats but have you have encountered a hairless cow? As determined through DNA, these unique animals evolved in South America and with selective breeding are especially suited to conditions in Loja Province.

It may seem counterintuitive that an animal without hair might be better adapted to areas with intense sun but that appears to be true. This breed has a better tolerance for heat, yet it is also known for its intelligence - these cattle will seek out shade when it gets too hot, and then are more active at night, grazing while it is cooler.

How can they handle the heat? Genetic breeding has given them a higher number of sweat glands compared to the average cow, and can thereby dissipate heat easier and more efficiently. Also, their skin is thinner which facilitates heat transfer while having deeper pigmentation to prevent sunburn.

As if these characteristics weren't enough to recommend them, Criollo cattle go one step further and have increased resistance to a number of diseases which impact their hairy "brethren." As well, this lack of hair makes them easier to keep clean, and when the time comes for butchering, the hairless hides have increased value.

Hairless cows - just one more fascinating aspect to living life in Loja.
